Survival Innovations Achieves ISO 9001 Registration
Survival Innovations, Inc., located in Arden, North Carolina, received certification of their Quality Management System to the ISO 9001:2008 standard on April 1, 2010 for design and manufacture of aviation life-support equipment.
Created and controlled by the International Standards Organization, ISO 9001 is the standard that provides uniform requirements for a Quality Management System. The registrar was AQA International, with World Headquarters in Columbia, South Carolina.
"SII began developing an ISO-based system when we formed the company," said Jason Smith, Vice President of Survival Innovations. "ISO certification demonstrates our commitment to quality products and services. We are grateful for the support offered by Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College in refining and auditing our Quality Management System.”
Survival Innovations was founded as a disabled veteran-owned small business. The key employees total more than 130 years of experience in the aviation life support industry. Survival Innovations has developed and tested ejection seats, survival vests, flotation collars, restraint harnesses, and chemical-biological protective gear.
“Now that we are ISO registered,” said Leon Rhodes, President of Survival Innovations, “we have to maintain it through frequent audits that can be as intense as the registration process itself. We’re ready for that. It tells our customers that we are dedicated to giving them the best products.”
Survival Innovations’ recent contracts involved design of equipment for the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Border Patrol, Camlock (UK) Ltd, and Lockheed Martin. Manufacturing and service contracts were awarded for ejection seat components, flotation devices, restraint devices, parachute system components, chemical-biological vests, and survival equipment pockets.
Survival Innovations has also been instrumental in upgrading military laboratory test equipment, such as horizontal accelerator, windblast, and ejection tower facilities.

Survival Innovations , Inc., of Asheville, will receive a $ 6 million contract from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory

Survival Innovations Inc., of Arden, will receive a $6 million contract from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory to create a unique head-and-neck restraint system for fighter pilots. The contract funds Survival Innovations to adapt their patented Head and Neck Restraint System for use in aircraft equipped with ejection seats. The system will undergo rigorous testing on mannequins and human subjects. “Our head-and-neck restraint system concept has the potential to resolve a long-standing issue with neck injuries during high-speed ejection,” said Leon Rhodes, president of Survival Innovations. “We look forward to tailoring this product for the benefit of our military air crews.”
Improvements in military aircraft technology require better performance by the escape system. Faster ejection intensifies the loads placed on the head. New devices mounted on the helmet add to the weight supported by the neck, increasing the danger of injury.
"This contract award is further proof that Western North Carolina is an important center for hightechnology solutions to keep our fighting men and women safe," said U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler, D-Waynesville, who announced the contract.
